So...I'm putting it into the blog so we can find it again next time we need it without tearing apart Grandaddy's office! :-)<br /><br /><strong>Born to Be a Pilot - Monday, May 9, 2005 Northwest Florida Daily News, By Kelly Humphrey<br /></strong><br />Baker - As a young man, Johnie Courtney dreamed of attending West Point and becoming an Army pilot.<br /><br />It was an ambition foreshadowed in his childhood as a North Okaloosa County farm boy.<br /><br />"My mother used to say that she always knew Johnie would grow up to be a pilot, because whenever they'd be out in the fields picking cotton, if a plane flew overhead he'd have to stop and gaze up at it," recalled Courtney's sister, Jeanette Henderson. "He had it in his blood."<br /><br />For a while, it looked like Courtney's dreams just might come true. Although his family lacked the political connections needed in those days to obtain an academy appointment, Courtney had heard that each year, two enlisted men in the Army were selected to attend West Point.<br /><br />Determined to be one of those two, he enlisted shortly after graduating from Baker School in 1936.<br /><br />"I almost made it," Courtney recalled. "I was the number three man on the list, so if anything had happened to the first two, I would have been in."<br /><br />Fortunately for numbers one and two, but not so fortunately for Courtney, the top two men made it to West Point unscathed. And while Courtney's dreams of flying may have appeared to be grounded, it was only a temporary setback.<br /><br />"I found out that there was a program where enlisted men could become pilots," he said. "So I stayed on that track, and in 1942 I went to flying school at Kelly Field in Texas."<br /><br />Ordinarily, the enlisted pilots were not allowed to fly in operational situations.<br /><br />"We were just supposed to be involved with maintenance and testing," Courtney explained. "But then the war came along and changed everything."<br /><br />Almost overnight, Courtney went from being a technical sargent to a newly commissioned second lieutenant flying A-36 dive bombers in North Africa.<br /><br />"There weren't very many of us who survived the war," he stated. "A-36 pilots had about an 86 percent mortality rate."<br /><br />Flying the tiny bombers was inherently dangerous because of the low altitude at which they operated.<br /><br />"You can see from the length of our missions that we were incredibly close to the front line," Courtney said, pointing to a report that detailed missions lasting just three or four minutes. "We used to say that if they (they German soldiers) threw their helmets in the air, they'd hit us."<br /><br />The A-36 pilots' job was to swoop down low over enemy targets and drop bombs on railroad installations, bridges, tunnels, and other infrastructure.<br /><br />"Our planes were equipped with two guns on each wing, and two synchronized guns that shot through the propeller," Courtney explained. "We'd use the two side guns for strafing targets, and we'd save the synchronized guns for the trip home. We needed the ammunition because we flew so low, and the Germans used to love to fly over us and jump us."<br /><br />One one occasion, Courtney was flying a mission over Italy when his small aircraft was hit by a 20-mm gun from a flak tower.<br /><br />"I was strafing some targets, and I didn't see the tower until I was already committed," he recalled. "I saw it coming, but there wasn't anything I could do about it."<br /><br />A few years later, Courtney would recount his experience for a local newspaper.<br /><br />"He just boresighted his 20 mm gun on me and WHAM! Smoke and fire began licking my face," he said. "I yanked the stick back hard, and at 800 feet the A-36 and I parted company. The 'chute swung once, maybe twice, then I was on the ground shucking the 'chute and running. I could see some of the 'master race' galloping up to make my acquaintance and I wasn't in a talkative mood."<br /><br />Courtney headed toward a stand of pine trees, where he tripped and began to roll down a small mountain. Seeing his rather unorthodox landing apparently discouraged the Germans, who gave up the chase.<br /><br />After taking part in more than 20 missions over enemy territory, Courtney chalked up three confirmed enemy kills and several "probables".<br /><br />Along the way, he earned a Purple Heart, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and several other decorations. In 1943, he was sent back to the states for some rest after being wounded, and paid a visit to his family in Baker.<br /><br />There the dashing young pilot took part in a bond rally at his alma mater, helping the senior class at Baker School raise more than $9,000 for the war effort.<br /><br />After Germany surrendered in May 1945, Courtney was assigned to a reorganized squandron that was sent to the Pacific theater to escort bombers launching an offensive against Japan.<br /><br />All told, he took part in more than 60 missions during the war, both in the European and Pacific theathers.<br /><br />"We flew our missions out of Iwo Jima," he recalled. "That's where I was when we got the word that the war was over."<br /><br />Although World War II may have ended, Courtney's service had not. During his early flight training, he and the other enlisted pilots had signed on for an eight-year committment.<br /><br />"I ended up being assinged to Eglin, which tickled me," Courtney said.<br /><br />Not long after, the ace pilot was called back to flying service as the Air Force ushered in its new fleet of jets.<br /><br />Over the next two decards, Courtney would fly dozens of different aircraft, taking part in such important missions as the Berlin Airlift.<br /><br />All in all, it was a fitting career for a farm boy fascinated by the planes he had watched fly over Baker so many years earlier.<br /><br />"I joined the Army because I didn't want to pick cotton for the rest of my life," he said with a laugh. "It turned out pretty good."</div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15224788419835940631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2687790135826208611.post-89581915114388541002009-05-02T09:38:00.000-07:002009-05-02T10:01:03.893-07:00Grandaddy the Snake Killer<div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKnEVpfdibOgbOL4rAT5j1k6n2FnLYvSfr5lGBBeWsnfoAgJ6tn8EyONRDQO9NBo6WQR7KlBham8PlEqCOlYAeQmlyHICqpwTK6w2TYK0c6ouEnXFMmJuJ2tbY-vL8YKrKZLx2ccabmnM/s1600-h/DSC07232.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331271514143349474" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKnEVpfdibOgbOL4rAT5j1k6n2FnLYvSfr5lGBBeWsnfoAgJ6tn8EyONRDQO9NBo6WQR7KlBham8PlEqCOlYAeQmlyHICqpwTK6w2TYK0c6ouEnXFMmJuJ2tbY-vL8YKrKZLx2ccabmnM/s320/DSC07232.JPG" border="0" /></a> Check out these pictures of the rattlesnake William and Grandaddy killed at our house this morning (well, mostly Grandaddy - William took his gun out but since the snake crawled right up bedside the house, Grandaddy killed it with his hoe instead). SO many people had turned out to personally welcome them home, I was overwhelmed...and I think some of the veterans were too (William did say that Grandaddy looked surprised and pleased when he realized that his whole family was there to greet him - I think he was just expecting Uncle Johnie to be there to give him a ride home :).<br /><br /><br />People were lining the walkway- all the way from baggage claim to the very end of the concourse. Active duty soldiers, retired military, regular townsfolk, family members, airport workers, previous "Honor Flight" veterans - all cheering, clapping, waving American flags and homemade signs saying "Thank You" and "Welcome Home".<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbqXye_BsYfR8qAubFmENmQpTC4hTdwLA8Y2HqdJ4k6T6txYpIPT_PLhsGxVvF_82KXCMcX-LUrHAVxrf98TGwbLeBLQHJ98NXcjg5YrrF9QOoCIyVZ9m681cwM47skya8oqxFNXcAyTw/s1600-h/DSC07066.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319965335986562834" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 322px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbqXye_BsYfR8qAubFmENmQpTC4hTdwLA8Y2HqdJ4k6T6txYpIPT_PLhsGxVvF_82KXCMcX-LUrHAVxrf98TGwbLeBLQHJ98NXcjg5YrrF9QOoCIyVZ9m681cwM47skya8oqxFNXcAyTw/s320/DSC07066.JPG" border="0" /></a><br />We got the honor of walking with Grandaddy through all these cheering folks, which included a walk through the Honor Guard's Saber Arch or the "sword tunnel" as Marshall called it. I think it was best summed up by the conversation Marshall had with an active duty soldier while walking in. He sat very still and was super-patient, which was amazing since he is only 1 1/2 years old. </div><br /><br /><div></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF62WBOnULe-M6r62mA_0q_yfs0va8tDrIfg-_WvXwwX4xxHO4-EetVf2H4BNXJvyMI3383BKOpP12HtQEOXkk_AQGwjmhTMhNerTa_5P5A8WiG6s_66-b1srAYkoQ34wfEomnOYJJuaE/s1600-h/DSC06960.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325493584201556402" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF62WBOnULe-M6r62mA_0q_yfs0va8tDrIfg-_WvXwwX4xxHO4-EetVf2H4BNXJvyMI3383BKOpP12HtQEOXkk_AQGwjmhTMhNerTa_5P5A8WiG6s_66-b1srAYkoQ34wfEomnOYJJuaE/s320/DSC06960.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div></div><div>When we were all finished, they gave him an official "Certficate of Bravery" and some Mickey ears to wear that were embroidered with "First Haircut" across the back. They had talked with the North Pole and found out that Santa's elves had been out joy-riding on Santa's sleigh the night before (to relieve a little pre-Christmas stress) and some presents had accidently fallen out of the sleigh over Aunt BB's yard (ok, so this isn't exactly how they told the story, but you have to admit, my version is funnier... ;). The kids had a great time finding the presents...however they got there. :)<br /><br /><br /><br />Here are a few pictures of our family taken at the party by Janet Carden of JCardenPhoto - Thanks Janet! If you take a close look at the pictures, you will get an idea of how the performance progressed, beginning with everyone roughly facing the right direction and singing the right words and ending with the boys playing with the microphones, bonking each other on the head with the musical shakers and making faces to entertain the giggling crowd (and yes, Marshall was right in the middle of it!).</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn9MmtB7b1QdqCPyYx4sfZa5iYQLDwnFLwvhIB2NEcMBeypIC96NJL7QcXP_HFGb1UWbX9SfDnaG1h73Bvkw5P9V4jYljeTodzxQJv_mS6d2EWtCmF7RRqqvbC5FghqwIiWRySnIm60yQ/s1600-h/DSC06689.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287686347818704466" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn9MmtB7b1QdqCPyYx4sfZa5iYQLDwnFLwvhIB2NEcMBeypIC96NJL7QcXP_HFGb1UWbX9SfDnaG1h73Bvkw5P9V4jYljeTodzxQJv_mS6d2EWtCmF7RRqqvbC5FghqwIiWRySnIm60yQ/s200/DSC06689.JPG" border="0" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC_uX_me25Ws8yJZiBvOCVpwpwyNrP1_DQDcsDy7NXpLZAASPoonp7TpYj8zMHbO0-8qLz635xOT7_a3YSSibnDPMfjgYGixkk99dAFM4wiUSFklgfJpi1Vqc5IGTLY_h2LTofqJvBQjU/s1600-h/DSC06692.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287687162060391426" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC_uX_me25Ws8yJZiBvOCVpwpwyNrP1_DQDcsDy7NXpLZAASPoonp7TpYj8zMHbO0-8qLz635xOT7_a3YSSibnDPMfjgYGixkk99dAFM4wiUSFklgfJpi1Vqc5IGTLY_h2LTofqJvBQjU/s200/DSC06692.JPG" border="0" /></a><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287686690894602258" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrJuX_ZUnvG3Zn8O0_EgWFICRYJVzjpiS38dvil5RZauuwdiAnC89-RwJXaXycXYKgrWOFqh9XFolHTslws4SYjlRzopVfa2QFZc-P0jp1XCwvnfo_k7GTZZ14_Qx8NTFt9iNup_O0t9k/s200/DSC06690.JPG" border="0" /><br /><div>All in all, the audience throughly enjoyed themselves and the kids learned a little something about the real reason for the Christmas season. The allergist asked us to both from his diet for a few weeks then add it back to see what happened. We had just started letting him have corn again on Tuesday of Thanksgiving week at the school Thanksgiving party. Then, on Thursday, we saw this rash come up all over his face and then spread to the rest of his body! We choked back tears (corn is EXTREMELY hard to avoid!) and started administering alot of Benadryl. After several days of Benadryl to no avail, we found a Pediatric clinic that was open (isn't this starting to sound like the story of our lives? ;) and discovered it was not hives after all; it was something called Fifth's Disease. Fifth's Disease is just another childhood virus and had NOTHING to do with a possible corn allergy. Yay!! Hooray!! Yay!! Yippee!!</div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihRjPRv7gOlwNcsDKzAAhAJ9PEEIj0-caBrApVwTtWoo5FQbRByA5zJndwyxH_fTndPRtUQh2qxTsAtSb1bn2qouHyfP8e4wsLuVXvb3gPW3GZ8xKHX0n7PHZ8ntsuOpy1ca6nu8vYN-8/s1600-h/DSC06604.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287982426949014466" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihRjPRv7gOlwNcsDKzAAhAJ9PEEIj0-caBrApVwTtWoo5FQbRByA5zJndwyxH_fTndPRtUQh2qxTsAtSb1bn2qouHyfP8e4wsLuVXvb3gPW3GZ8xKHX0n7PHZ8ntsuOpy1ca6nu8vYN-8/s200/DSC06604.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /></div><br /><div>So that's the story of our Thanksgiving. By party day we had lots of dino activities! They filled swimming pools with sand for the "Dino Dig" in which the kids got to dig for "real" dino skeletons and bones. They built nests, filled them with eggs and hid them throughout the house for the kids "Dino Egg Hunt". They even built a dino cave for the kids to play in and draw cave paintings inside and they blew up lots of inflatable dinosaurs for decoration (and for play too! ;). Marshall started out the month wanting to be the hero from the Sleeping Beauty story (this is a favorite bedtime book - there is a big, evil dragon name Maleficient that is slayed at the end of the story by the brave hero, Prince Phillip) so I got on ebay and found a costume complete with dragon-slaying sword and shield. I also found a similar costume for Jack (<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaXwkBqCP156OxW3Zt0uiSbjIBSxhyphenhyphenrzzWqKBoeINR3W4YH7ycm56Ltv6SpbGYOt2imZ0I2KidBCFSsNXviVMi4pypOia8fM9yb5Pl6PT26ALKPJnNzMMMIrAaD-1_l-jhi2_QO3xmATw/s1600-h/DSC06295+(2).jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262781520507627778" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 165px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaXwkBqCP156OxW3Zt0uiSbjIBSxhyphenhyphenrzzWqKBoeINR3W4YH7ycm56Ltv6SpbGYOt2imZ0I2KidBCFSsNXviVMi4pypOia8fM9yb5Pl6PT26ALKPJnNzMMMIrAaD-1_l-jhi2_QO3xmATw/s200/DSC06295+(2).jpg" border="0" /></a>since his main motto these days is, "Me too!").<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Then as Halloween week got closer and the kids at school started <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj00d39oLmcpjLkXHETsuEFGcqU-heAzq5nddY7YU1I0ZRFxXp4S3m_8xWIJu3DSHhusJJW1TBaP_Edo_saCSDdrYZQPpB_o1V7EnT2YDe_N5jnV-aV61jC7YxIy9wppNTfDhUcKkvmZgE/s1600-h/DSC06289+(2).jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262788228532146258" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 164px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 200px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj00d39oLmcpjLkXHETsuEFGcqU-heAzq5nddY7YU1I0ZRFxXp4S3m_8xWIJu3DSHhusJJW1TBaP_Edo_saCSDdrYZQPpB_o1V7EnT2YDe_N5jnV-aV61jC7YxIy9wppNTfDhUcKkvmZgE/s200/DSC06289+(2).jpg" border="0" /></a>talking about what they were going to be, Marshall decided he really, really wanted to be Batman. Well, after about a week of him answering Batman after anyone asked what he was going to be for Halloween, I melted and got out the Batman masks and costumes I had bought at a children's resale to give him and Jack at Christmas. With a little help from Granny, we made a new cape to go with it and our little Batman has never been happier. :)<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhem-i-fovdrNniGA0iG9wbASCwrnohqAgtnORroZGPgjNiZx77W_MmHhpDPILnnh2b4OLXwZVWz-7CPeJevH-JJeWNIRnHHhri2-_mZD2rjatkaX0TjWTuyQ2Z2JUN2HBu_5kmMTxWzzM/s1600-h/DSC06265.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262781999178109458" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhem-i-fovdrNniGA0iG9wbASCwrnohqAgtnORroZGPgjNiZx77W_MmHhpDPILnnh2b4OLXwZVWz-7CPeJevH-JJeWNIRnHHhri2-_mZD2rjatkaX0TjWTuyQ2Z2JUN2HBu_5kmMTxWzzM/s320/DSC06265.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Once we got through the costume saga, we started Halloweening on Saturday with a Birthday/Halloween party for Marshall's friend, Carson. The kids were asked to wear their costumes and Carson's house was decorated with spooky oooky Halloween decorations (Marshall picked up the phrase "spooky ooky" from the Disney channel and uses it all the time lately to describe anything Halloween-related :). Carson had a giant bounce house for the kiddos to play in and his parents even did a hay ride around the neighborhood (minus the actual hay - I guess it was more a trailer ride than a hay ride but the kids had fun never-the-less ;).<br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_0KOGSh8AgWzseQSKL6wgL4VxVBpEkLSdYQYKmscZ7axByfLCM7B-z9_jAiOPIbrEoGSyhgo1UKPWYhBYzHJdQbuetBhdkVMUIfbXbaOsFWRbi66uADDrdRkWHMyGmpSUL7AbdNekO1A/s1600-h/DSC06266.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262785360726244002" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 200px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_0KOGSh8AgWzseQSKL6wgL4VxVBpEkLSdYQYKmscZ7axByfLCM7B-z9_jAiOPIbrEoGSyhgo1UKPWYhBYzHJdQbuetBhdkVMUIfbXbaOsFWRbi66uADDrdRkWHMyGmpSUL7AbdNekO1A/s200/DSC06266.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br />They also had a costume contest in which Marshall won the prize for "Best Boy Costume" and very appropriately, the prize bucket included a plastic bat toy which Marshall absolutely loved (he literally played with it until it fell apart! :). Last year we went with them on Halloween night and it was pure chaos! Everyone in our small town trick-or-treats there - there were so many kids. The city even stations cops all over the place to direct traffic and generally keep things safe. The one downside last year was that since there were so many kids everywhere, homeowners just sat on their front porches and handed candy out of big buckets so none of the kids got to ring the doorbells and wait to yell "Trick-or-Treat!".<br /><br />So this year we went on Tuesday night which is only for kids who live in the neighborhood (or, in our case, those kids trick-or-treating with someone who lives in the neighborhood). It was definitely much calmer this way and Marshall and Michael had a great time (not sure about Jack and Lauren - they were good sports, no complaints at all but "fun" as a descripter might be stretching it a little.... ;)<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWtt9bik3FiZUAsbEgVGpn7s6yrl48aouByRcIex4quK7IGYGpwUV8uTrbliw2Ck-NdffCWLP4_Lk_ddq48lRsWPVkh_eZk5c1b0DRNzvfDJ8pnEMeZO4Xup9QtDxz3A-Ikk-nKRy5m44/s1600-h/DSC06341.JPG"></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDifAQ7GviXFJS45CWh1nJRcxPf9Y66dOse2Yb8guiL8hq0pZiYljGFN-9f8Coan06GMNBq7YaCxZ_0wxMk_Kg73IYJ0lnZfYYTPK6-igTEA47u-gN0Fii6X9bYA7-8tKkLo_6_CHCOEg/s1600-h/DSC06341.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262787963762164050" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 200px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDifAQ7GviXFJS45CWh1nJRcxPf9Y66dOse2Yb8guiL8hq0pZiYljGFN-9f8Coan06GMNBq7YaCxZ_0wxMk_Kg73IYJ0lnZfYYTPK6-igTEA47u-gN0Fii6X9bYA7-8tKkLo_6_CHCOEg/s200/DSC06341.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br />Wednesday night we went to the Fall Festival at the church. For those who didn't know I was having surgery, don't be offended, I didn't have much advance notice myself!<br /><br /><br />I have had thyroid problems for years, in fact I have had multiple thyroid issues (Graves disease, a multi-nodular goiter, questions about possible throid cancer). Always before, when the doctor checked things out with ultrasound, my cancer risk was estimated ~ 10% and since there are possible some side-effects associated with surgical removal of the thyroid gland (like damage to the nerves that control the vocal chords or damage to the glands that regulate calcium absorption in the body) the risk was never really high enough to warrant surgery.<br /><br /><br />All that changed a couple of weeks ago when I went in for a regular check-up. When the doc looked at the ultrasound he noticed that some of the nodules had grown significantly since last check and he also discovered some "micro-calcifications" in the large nodules. To make matters worse, one of the newly big solid nodules was too deep to do a needle biopsy on. All these factors combined increased my cancer risk to ~ 40%, so vocal chords be darned, "it must come out!" :).<br /><br /><br />I met with the surgeon and then stalled about a week on the surgery date in order to be healthy for Jack's first birthday party (pictures coming soon). I had to stay in the hospital one night and then came home to be VERY uncomfortable for the last week and a half of being unable to turn my head, unable to pick up anything even remotely heavy, unable to drive, unable to play with or even really hug the kids, etc. What a pain in the neck! (pun intended :)<br /><br /><br />Lots of good news to end this one though! It wasn't cancer (Thank you Lord!), my calcium absorption is still fine, and I can still talk (relief for some, horror for others ;).<br /><br /><br />Let's hope we don't have to do anything like this for a really long time!<br /><br /><br /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233069283545988578" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-dD2Lcy_xGMeiCDfEdroyykNiBGC6x3uLrrfv0BEKh72RFIwYb4z5oOswhq5LL6_uwwRGoY0p39m8xurQrI_UiJ2ZBiRMurFTg4lxc5wmhEsmZ7zMMPVUTyPgD5sEoltdAXOvYSTuK5E/s320/309.JPG" border="0" /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233069589592080834" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaMKivxKTHTKfri1UFQsCrxDN3bvpSizePY31nMfoLVd2OM8Yk3EZc-OhRkK99_ceYrsuIWet2TNCz-gxdKgIEFFXH1Xwib6Nh6xXA2UhEUNuqMuT267nVD9efGTg-AjGwwwSi2SXI3tM/s320/308.JPG" border="0" />Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15224788419835940631noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2687790135826208611.post-90405917236250802222008-07-03T14:42:00.000-07:002008-09-19T15:47:33.321-07:00Quality Family Time...in a Parking Lot<div><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2HRqjH_w7du3Cb3VMccK9PqHimG5gDHaFjN3Q4ZWFxlrvzyi80mUdSQUKTyZ-f4zgPcEZ05x5MlTkM1XdUsdqTq0rShFLIHV1j_uCY38jS4VdNMvavstkOGVbcfTfoCLTeTJ9D_-ZNRE/s1600-h/DSC01623.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247866003031086002" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2HRqjH_w7du3Cb3VMccK9PqHimG5gDHaFjN3Q4ZWFxlrvzyi80mUdSQUKTyZ-f4zgPcEZ05x5MlTkM1XdUsdqTq0rShFLIHV1j_uCY38jS4VdNMvavstkOGVbcfTfoCLTeTJ9D_-ZNRE/s320/DSC01623.JPG" border="0" /></a> <div><div><div><div><div>The last time the kids and I rode with my mom down to her place in Central FL, we decided to meet-up with my little sis for the day at Disney World.</div><div><br /></div><div></div><div> </div><div>The kids had a great time, even though it was pretty crowded, and my sister and I got a chance to catch up while Granny spoiled the grandkids. Bella and Marshall watched the light parade thanks to their super-nice parents holding them up above the crowd (I must note that little kids' weight seems to multiply exponentially while holding them up this way!) and after the fireworks, we said goodbye to Aunt Chrissy and mom, me and the kiddos went to do one last ride before we too, headed out before the second parade of the night started, in order to beat the crowds to our car. </div><div><br /></div><div></div><div><br /></div><div>We did manage to get out of the park just before of the start of the second parade (it had to be a pretty funny site, Mom and I trying not to run as we noticed the Main Street lights go off and heard the parade music starting. I was thinking of the bible story about Lot's wife the whole way as I was repeating under might breath "Don't look back, don't look back" and hoping against hope the kids would not turn around to realize what was going was starting right behind us). Luck was on our side (or so we thought) and we made it out of the park with the kiddos none the wiser as far as that second parade was concerned. </div><div><br /><br /></div><div></div><div>We quickly got on the ferry and made our way back to the Ticket and Transportation Center to catch a tram (no lines b/c everyone was still watching the parade) back to our car. </div><div></div></div><div><div><br /></div><div>As we get to the car, it's well after 11pm and we are really tired; even Marshall was asking for milk (which at this time of the night is code for "I want to go to bed"). And that's when things got really interesting. My mom caouldn't find her keys. My mom, the queen of great organizing ideas and neat little organizing gadgets, who always has her keys hooked on a carabiner (sp?) on her purse strap, can't find her keys. Turns out, she had taken them off the strap to move them to "safety" insider her purse - to make sure she didn't loose them. We guessed they must have fallen out at some point during the day. Now what?!?!?<br /><br />So, off I go to find help. A ride on the tram to find a Disney Security officer led us to Disney Security manager who galantly offered to drive to the Lost and Found at the Magic Kingdom to retrieve the missing keys for us (instead of making us go through all the trams, boats, etc it takes to get back to Magic Kingdom). To keep entertained, Granny and Marsahll rode on the tram until the tram service shut down for the night (at this point it was well past midnight) and then we huddled in the empty parking lot to wait for our night-in-shining-uniform to arrive with the keys. When she did, we hugged her, thanked her and prompty headed home. </div><div><br /><br /><br /></div><div></div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUaMPF3EIr5jVpo2QaoNFNMPHu_yhsaaM-9W2H0wdBLLxWL_EqbQAAiFBBA0fLkqI584j1wD_U5cxcKJDG7asY7nOSt22_TDcNmPS_gFW5D57pzBZM8-v21xRznsZGmvR3dffygyR58EM/s1600-h/DSC01636.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247867116320422498" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUaMPF3EIr5jVpo2QaoNFNMPHu_yhsaaM-9W2H0wdBLLxWL_EqbQAAiFBBA0fLkqI584j1wD_U5cxcKJDG7asY7nOSt22_TDcNmPS_gFW5D57pzBZM8-v21xRznsZGmvR3dffygyR58EM/s320/DSC01636.JPG" border="0" /></a> </div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizZnCSZD9kTZAe753dcAPUqR1BY7hseZrT0neERwxpO4DoXzeSme-umHnZPK8fQt3lHFN-3nvyF-hP8u5ZGHBbNSsTGqAEd8tvLBKbjqmWAZ28Ldcr1rM90WDs1-QVW-z3JIfntfwZbZM/s1600-h/DSC01639.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247867498718834562" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizZnCSZD9kTZAe753dcAPUqR1BY7hseZrT0neERwxpO4DoXzeSme-umHnZPK8fQt3lHFN-3nvyF-hP8u5ZGHBbNSsTGqAEd8tvLBKbjqmWAZ28Ldcr1rM90WDs1-QVW-z3JIfntfwZbZM/s320/DSC01639.JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDyetCPaMPL7L9lX4oMt0EACqtmJByd1Q8mZOJnaNIOwWEy0UVhw9R9sgXzN0dMmG7rNA-th-MJV9MBDXOwxhn8WVujP3cJQUTlGh6Ft1jrmGg9p8vpBimiX6XtFYwuUS48r-Kp6uYldA/s1600-h/DSC01625.JPG"></a></div><div><br /><br /><br /><br /></div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDyetCPaMPL7L9lX4oMt0EACqtmJByd1Q8mZOJnaNIOwWEy0UVhw9R9sgXzN0dMmG7rNA-th-MJV9MBDXOwxhn8WVujP3cJQUTlGh6Ft1jrmGg9p8vpBimiX6XtFYwuUS48r-Kp6uYldA/s1600-h/DSC01625.JPG"></a> </div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15224788419835940631noreply@blogger.com0
